Maggie Oliver Foundation

Worldwide Teaching and Cover People have recently chosen the “Maggie Oliver Foundation” as their designated charity.   After reading up on the work that Maggie and her team of Trustees and Ambassadors do, I was excited to speak to Maggie about how I personally and as a Company can help.  Recent months have had an even more detrimental effect on those suffering and the Maggie Oliver Foundations and phone lines have been instrumental in offering much needed support.  Whilst the foundation has had phenomenal success there is still much more to do.    With not enough time in the day to deal with the amount of calls coming in, they are in desperate need of more people and resources, but this costs money.

Most people will know of or would of heard of Maggie Oliver who is best known as the Detective-turned- whistle-blower who resigned from Greater Manchester Police in late 2012 in order to expose the now infamous Rochdale Grooming Scandal. Her ability to connect with people and encourage them to speak out against injustice paired with her grit and determination to expose the truth is inspiring. This eventually led to the multi award-winning dramatisation of the case entitled Three Girls (BBC One) which brought some of the issues to public attention for the first time. Maggie was also a key contributor for The Betrayed Girls documentary (BBC One)

Maggie’s relationship with the victims of child grooming continues to this day, still fighting for justice for survivors throughout the whole of the UK.

The above led to The Maggie Oliver Foundation. Maggie continues to highlight the problem of child sexual abuse on a very local and national scale, particularly the failures of the authorities to address this effectively.  This means that survivors often feel abandoned, isolated, mistrustful of the police, the criminal justice system and other statutory agencies, not knowing who to approach for help.  There is a long way to go.

Worldwide Teaching and Cover People will donate £1 for every day booked through us to the Foundation.  This will be taken out of our margins NOT added onto the school charge rates.  Payments will be made on a monthly basis to assist in the Foundations monthly outgoings.  We aim to update Clients of contributions made and hopefully how this has benefitted them during that month.   This is an amazing Charity to support and I am eager to see the incredible work they will do in the future reaching more victims who need their help.   Some of the stories are heart breaking but unfortunately are going on very close to home.

I hope our clients will be pleased with our choice of charity and continue to support us and the Foundation in the fight against abuse. DBS Update Service...

What is the DBS Update Service?

The DBS update service is available for standard and enhanced checks, the Update Service is an annual online subscription. The DBS update service allows anyone with a DBS check to keep their certificates up to date for themselves & employers without the need to reapply with each agency or a new job. Employers now, with your permission can check the validity of your certificate for you. So long as you keep up to date with your annual payments your DBS checks have no official expiration date.

Do I need to sign up for the DBS Update Service?

Employers would strongly recommend you do as it is much simpler and cost-effective to do so. The online Update Service means that employers can log on to check candidates’ certificates, saving candidates time and money. For Supply who have a DBS on the update service and who have no changes to their circumstances then this is the best thing to do. We would always suggest you do this then you can also use it with other employers too! The only time (so long as you keep your annual £13 fee updated) you will need to do a new one is a. if an employer requests a new one or if your circumstances change and we are updated when checking your DBS that you need to apply for a new one. This is normally if something has been added. If you do get a new DBS and have paid for the update service then you will be able to add/remove certificates.

Signing up to the DBS Update Service (Be careful not to miss the deadline)

Once you have your DBS check, you will need your certificate number to register for the service. This must be done within 30 days of the certificate being issued. Once you have registered you will then receive login details so you can manage your account, including updating payment details and personal information and of course view your certificate details. Your subscription will last for one year. Most people opt for the automatic renew which will see £13 deducted from your credit or debit card automatically every year. Please be careful when choosing this option to update payment details if you change the card you have registered. Lots of people get caught out with this as its an annual subscription they forget. We do try to remind people when its due but it is your responsibility.

Some candidates choose not to have your subscription automatically renewed.
In this case, you can update yourself up to 30 days before it is due to end. The DBS will send you a reminder but in some case's this can land in your junk folder and can be missed. Again we would normally also send reminders but this is your responsibility. Failure to renew would result in costs for a new DBS.

Working Overseas...

Working overseas in International Schools for Teaching is becoming as natural as taking a long term supply position in the UK. With International Schools popping up monthly the demand for International Teachers is steady. That said Covid has caused a delay in starts and in some cases start dates being postponed for sometime.

The benefits of working overseas very much depend on the individual but some of the things our Teachers love about it are:-

The new normal...

Writing the perfect CV...

Top Tips.....
  • Tailor your CV to each job where possible by updating profile

  • Keep it concise, ideally no more than two pages

  • DON'T leave gaps on your CV they will either put your CV to one side or come back and ask

  • Check for spelling and grammatical errors

  • Make sure it looks good, no pictures or colour unless your applying for an overseas vacancy where you will need a head shot

  • Tell the truth!!

  • Provide a supporting statement

  • If you really want to be adventurous provide us with a video to support your CV telling us why you would be an asset to a school including your skills & experience
